At Grand Martial Arts, our grappling programs offer you the opportunity to delve deep into this intricate and powerful discipline. Through our expert instruction, you'll learn to control confrontations, escape dangerous situations, and develop a profound understanding of body mechanics and strategic thinking.

What is Grappling? The Science of Control

Grappling encompasses a wide array of techniques designed to control an opponent in close quarters, primarily on the ground or in a standing clinch, without the use of strikes. It's often referred to as "physical chess" because it demands deep strategic thinking and problem-solving.

Our grappling classes will teach you to master key techniques, including:

  • Takedowns: Learn how to safely and effectively bring your opponent to the ground from a standing position. This includes techniques like double-leg takedowns, hip throws, and single-leg takedowns, giving you the advantage of controlling where the fight takes place.

  • Pins/Control: Develop the ability to hold your opponent down, rendering them unable to escape or strike back. Mastering various control positions (like mount, side control, and back control) is crucial for maintaining dominance and setting up subsequent techniques.

  • Escapes: Discover how to intelligently get out of bad positions when you are held down or caught in a submission. Escapes are fundamental to survival and enable you to reverse the situation.

  • Sweeps: Learn to reverse your position from the bottom, transitioning from a defensive posture to an offensive one, often by unbalancing your opponent and moving from bottom to top.

  • Submissions: This is the ultimate goal in many grappling encounters. You'll learn to apply techniques that force your opponent to "tap out" (surrender) due to discomfort or pain. These include:

    • Joint locks: Targeting shoulders, arms, legs, and feet to apply pressure to joints.

    • Chokeholds: Applying pressure to the neck to restrict blood flow or airflow, safely and effectively.

    • Body manipulation: Using your body to control and submit your opponent through various forms of leverage and pressure.

While many martial arts incorporate grappling elements, our primary focus for grappling at Grand Martial Arts is rooted deeply in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), which is widely recognized as one of the most effective grappling arts for self-defence. You will also learn elements common to wrestling and Judo, which are crucial for takedowns and clinch work.
